discussing
While waiting for the commandant's decision concerning opening the check-point, we tried to discuss with the Israeli soldiers. They are all very young, between 18 and 22 years old, and doing their obligatory military service (which lasts 3 years). As a small pacific group we didn't represent any threat, so after a while their aggressiveness dropped a little and some of them accepted to talk with us (at least the ones speaking english or arabic).
We talked about our mission, about peace, about settlements, about the israeli reservists refusing to serve in the army, and so on.
One soldier was coming from Marocco (arabic Jew). He was the most virulent. Talking about Palestinians he said: "I hate them! I want to kill them all!"
Another soldier said he stand for peace, he was doing his military service reluctantly, he had no choice but to obey the orders. When one of us asked him why he didn't refuse to serve in the army, another soldier came to interrupt our discussion...
An Israeli photographer (from secret services?) came and carefully took pictures of everyone in our group. Besides, these small discussions were repeatedly interrupted by commandant's phonecalls, orders and negociations, back and forth movements of the soldiers or the tanks or the jeep, dog's barking, and so on and on... ceremonial parade of power.
