Mothers and Wives of Palestinian prisoners imprisoned in Israel have many difficulties in getting authorization to visit their son or husband. Israeli authorities often refuse to deliver the permission, without any reason (or with a pretext of "security reason"). Some mothers/wives haven't seen their son/husband for more than 8 years.
With the help of Red-Cross, Mothers and Wives of prisoners can get a visit ticket:
- once every 2 weeks
- for one adult (mother or wife) and 2 children under 16 (older children aren't allowed to visit their father)
- present of max 1 kg
To go to Israel they have to cross Eretz check-point, where the custom officers often block them for hours with long questionings and searching.
They often blackmail them: visit right or money in exchange with informations on their husband's, sons' and relatives' activities.
Some women are also victims of disrespectful searches. One mother told us an officer wanted to force her to accept a body search, because he accused her of transporting hashisch. She refused and was kept at the check-point for hours.
After Eretz check-point: they have also to pass the prison's controls, again long questioning and searches. Their bags are emptied on the ground for the search and threats and insults are common practices.
